The Principle and Elements

What is design?

• Design elements are the basic unit of a visual image
• The principles of design govern the relationship of the elements used and organize the composition as a whole
• All imagery is comprised of elements that can be broken down and analyzed, including web design

Design Elements

• Space
• Line
• Color
• Shape
• Texture
• Value

Space

• Can exist in 2 or 3 dimensions
• Can also be positive space or negative space
• Can refer to foregorund mid or background elements

Line

• Can take different shape

Shape

• Everything takes shape

Texture

• Can be implied with different dimensions of elements
• Can be real

Design Principles

• Unity
• Harmony
• Variety
• Repetition
• Proximity
• Proportion
• Functionality

Unity

• Unity creates a sense of order, consistency in shape and size
• Proximity can create a sense of unity/lack there of

Variety

• Can add detail
• Can draw in the viewer

Repetition

• Create a sense of together
• Patterns can attract viewers
• can use other elements to be not 100% the same

Proportion

• Bad proportion will distract the viewer
